History of the Vineyard at Red Poppy Estate
Red Red Poppy Estate is a locally acclaimed winery located in the Macedon Ranges and comprises a 2 hectare vineyard. The property was purchased in 2018, with the previous owner having removed the wires and dripper system, leaving only a small portion of the vineyard intact. We knew the vineyard was in an excellent position on the property for the grapes to thrive and we set about restoring the vineyard. This has taken us a number of years to do. Initially we fenced the vineyard to keep the cattle out and put back the end assemblies and set about running wires.
Each row is over 200 meters long and requires three wires. There are 26 rows! We then added the sheep to the vineyard over the winter and have done so every autumn/winter since. Then we waited to see what would happen. We also spoke to the original owner who planted the vineyard to understand what was planted and that it was not on root stock (luck for us as in some places the ground was bare). Many of the vines popped their heads up and are now thriving under our organic and bio dynamic principles.
Meet the Wine Maker — Hi, my name’s Andrew!
My passion for wine making began over 10 years ago in what I would call a hobby on steroids. In keeping with the values we hold at Tall Poppy Farm, I sought to develop a range of natural wines using organic and biodynamic principles, resulting in a natural, low sulphur wine, free of nasty sprays such at glyphosate. At Red Poppy Estate winery, we aim to produce wines that are reflective of our regenerative and biodynamic practices, increasing the biodiversity and organic matter in the soil. Each year, the vintage is reflective of the weather and ever changing soil conditions. For this reason, as a boutique vineyard we produce small, unique wine batches annually, reflective of the season. Our specialties include our signature pet nat wines and our sparkling shiraz varieties.
